The Derald Fretts Memorial Bursary

The Derald Fretts Memorial Bursary pays tribute to the immense love, passion, and dedication Derald Fretts bestowed upon students, education, and the Alberta community. In honor of his remarkable impact, this bursary has been established to empower students and elevate their success with an annual award of $500.

Derald’s illustrious 32-year teaching career began at Crescent Heights High School (1973-1991) and continued to shine at Ernest Manning High School (1991-1997). In 1995, he achieved recognition as a Finalist for the esteemed Excellence in Teaching Awards. Derald’s significant contributions extended beyond the classroom as well, culminating in his role as the Coordinator of Corporate Partnerships at the Calgary Board of Education’s downtown office (1997-2005). In 1997, he was honored with the esteemed Mayor’s Excellence Award for for “excellence in the promotion of Partnerships”.

We are very excited to be able to honour Derald’s memory as a well-loved Calgary teacher and continue to support his legacy of inspiring and elevating students’ success. Each year, we will proudly present one deserving individual with the Derald Fretts Memorial Bursary.

The Calgary Flames Ambassadors are a group of approximately 50 business individuals who represent the Calgary Flames in the community and support various fund-raising initiatives for the Calgary Flames Foundation charity.

The group was originally created in 1998 when a handful of passionate fans and business leaders bounded together to help bolster season ticket sales during a particularly challenging stretch for the team, known then as “Save the Flames”. The group evolved and became involved in various Flames initiatives, and the term “Ambassador” was coined in 2002.

Since then, we’ve grown to include business leaders from across Calgary, united by a common passion for the Calgary Flames and a desire to give back to the community through volunteerism and philanthropy. The Ambassadors’ marquee event is the annual Celebrity Poker Tournament, and we’re heavily involved in various other fund-raising initiatives such as the Paint the Town Red luxury dining experience, past Celebrity Roasts, galas and various other community events in support of the Calgary Flames Foundation.

The Foundation supports various deserving initiatives in education, health & wellness and amateur/grassroots sports, including the Rotary Flames House, Kids Cancer Care Foundation, YMCA Grade 6 Free Membership Program, KidSport Calgary Even Strength Program and various post-secondary scholarships.

The Calgary Flames Ambassadors have helped raise over $8 million dollars to date for the Foundation and we’re proud to support positive change in the lives of thousands of Southern Albertans every year
